The Coalition for the Homeless is trying to fill a need for minorities in local shelters.The organization launched a new initiative called “Black hair care supply drive.” The goal is to provide hair and hygiene products made specifically for people of color who are staying at shelters.Organizers said many of the donations they receive do not cater to the needs of Black and brown people.”People need to go out into the world feeling like their best selves. So if their hair isn’t done, or they don’t feel confident going out into the world, they’re not going to go search for a job,” Leandra Williams said. “They are not going to talk to a landlord, and they don’t want to talk to us.
